How Do You Handle Mistakes at Work
How Do You Handle Mistakes at Work What do you do when you totally messed something up at work? Do you admit the mistake? Do you hide? Do you make excuses? Blame someone else?We are all going to make mistakes at work. Its inevitable. Some of us will make a lot of mistakes. Learning from the mistakes is what will set you apart from your peers. Yesterday I messed something up at work. I over-heard my team lead talking to another banker about it. They were concerned about the legal issues that could result from my action but didnt know who made the mistake. The minute I heard their conversation, I walked over to my leads desk and said Oh no! That was me! How do I resolve this issue?! It turns out that my mistake wasnt as big of a deal as we initially thought it was. From this mistake, I learned how to handle certain legal issues associated with a client passing away, which I have not yet had to deal with in my banking career. I will definitely not forget how to handle this if/when the situation arises again. Im really glad I stepped up and admitted my mistake right away. Now I have no guilty feelings or secrets to hide. I also learned a lot yesterday that I wouldnt have learned if I didnt readily fess up. Im hoping that my confession also built trust and respect with my lead so that she knows that I will take responsibility for my actions and fix them when I make more mistakes in the future. How do YOU handle mistakes at work?

A Head For Details...
A Head For Details... They say a change does us good, and we do have issues with parts our own body and face that we would love to change. But the fact is for a lot of us its not the big changes we need to make. We can make a lot of simple changes for big effects in our face. As we age, there are lots of little changes that take place on our face. The tips of our noses droop because of the weakening of the connective tissue supporting the nasal cartilage. Our foreheads expand as our hairline retreats, and even our ears get a bit longer as the cartilage grows! We can all do with a change, especially when it comes to addressing little details that add up. But for a lot of us there are little things we can do that will make a long-lasting impact. The Hair Believe it or not, we can find ways to make your hair look young. As we age our hair will grow, thinner, grayer, and dryer. Because of our scalp producing fewer natural oils, our hair struggles to make moisture. So what can we do? The first thing you need to address is your diet, believe it or not, as what you will eat or not may have a big impact on your hair as you age. Protein is essential for healthy hair as well as vitamins like vitamin A, vitamin C, as well as nutrients like zinc. If youve addressed your diet, its time to look at your hair parting and styling. The most obvious spot we can see our hair thinning is in our parting, so to camouflage this, try a zigzag part rather than a straight one, as this will create a lot of volume. Are you guilty of over styling your hair? As we age, we feel the tendency to overcompensate by adding more products to our hair, which will strip it of the natural oils, therefore contributing to dryness. So if you can cut back on over washing of yo ur hair, this will be a big help. And in fact, if you are looking for a way to wash your hair without stripping it of the natural oils its recommended that cold water or having a cold shower is one way to maintain the moisture without removing the oils. You may want to add a hair product that contains either panthenol, niacinamide, or caffeine, as these are shown to thicken individual hair strands and therefore add volume. You may also want to try a supplement if you are not getting enough nutrients from your diet. A vitamin known as biotin has been shown to help prevent hair thinning, which you can take in supplement form or eat biotin rich foods such as eggs, raspberries, cheese, and peanut butter, just dont put them in your hair! The Forehead Image Source If you are someone who raises your eyebrows constantly or are just continually bemused by things you may find that your forehead has a lot of lines to show for it. A lot of Hollywood stars like Gwyneth Paltrow have opted for a specific laser treatment known as Thermage, but there are ways you can remove wrinkles from your forehead with a spoon! Thats right, a spoon! Massage treatments created by cosmetologist Rene Koch has been shown to give some fantastic results, and all you need is a couple of stainless teaspoons with a cup of cold water, ice cubes, and a bowl of oil (either essential oil, olive oil, or linseed oil). The idea behind the process is to use the spoons to reduce the swelling on your face, and then you massage your face with a specific pattern which you can find at this link. However, if you dont find rubbing spoons on your face a productive method to reduce lines on your forehead, you could go for a few simpler options. There are many line plumping creams you could us e which contain peptides or retinol and retinoids, which stimulate collagen to fill in the creases on your forehead. You could choose a light reflecting primer to camouflage the lines which also keeps your makeup from etching itself into your furrowed brows. Or if you cant afford any products right now, you may want to be stealthy and place bangs over your forehead, but make sure that its in combination with a side parting above one of your pupils, as a center parting will draw attention to your forehead. The Eyes Image Source The eyes have it, as they say. And they are the windows to your soul, so if you are trying to find a few ways to make your eyes look younger, surprisingly, the best place to start is your diet. If you have a diet high in sodium, it has an impact on your eye bags as they are made more visible. Also, there is always the option of eyelid surgery if you suffer from drooping eyelids which can age you considerably. There is one type of eye surgery, known as blepharoplasty, was pioneered by cosmetic surgeon John P. Fezza M.D. and was then continued by Dr. Ruth Yeilding who developed a unique eyelid surgery technique. Dr. Yeildings advanced eyelid surgery technique uses a laser for clean and precise incisions that result in favorable healing and minimal scars which is peace of mind for anyone considering going down this avenue. Laser surgeries can have unpleasant side effects, but with ever improving technology combined with affordable financial plans, it is proving to be a go to option for a lot of people. Other options to look after your eyes is to apply eye cream properly, by using a pea-sized amount and starting from the inner corner of the eye, gradually working out towards the crows feet. Use any remaining product on your brow bone where your sunglasses would rest. And if you dont wear sunglasses, its time to start because it will stop you squinting, which will increase the amount of lines around the eye area. The Nose Image Source A lot of us can feel very self-conscious about our nose. We may feel its too big but there are little methods to reduce the size of your nose without going for surgery, and one of them is doing specific exercises that will help to change the shape of your nose. The idea behind a lot of exercises for reducing the shape of your nose is to build the muscle cartilage. And much like doing workouts for your body, there are ones you can do for your nose, and there are plenty you can find online. But one of the easier ones to do is to massage each area of your nose. If you do this for about five minutes a day on each area of your nose, on the tip, the sides, and the bridge, in a circular motion, you will see the difference after some time. But you do need to be patient! The Ears Image Source Its not something we would tend to think about on a daily basis, but there are rejuvenation techniques to lift your ears which are done in a similar way to repairing tears after an accident. There are methods to have your ears pinned back, but if money is an issue then you would need to go for the old-fashioned methods of disguising or drawing attention away from your ears. Unfortunately, there is no method for self-massaging the years without it losing its elasticity. The best approaches to disguise is to hang your hair over your ears, or if you feel like you really need to disguise your ears you could use double-sided tape but, of course, this can come undone! The Lips Image Source The enemy of younger looking lips is dryness. You need to add moisture to your lips wherever you can, but if you have extreme dryness, you may wish to consult a dermatologist. If you are trying to erase the vertical wrinkles around your mouth, the one way to slow down this etching is by adding a collagen booster to your mouth on a daily basis or apply sunscreen regularly. You could invest in a product that contains hyaluronic acid that will plump up the fine lines and when it comes to giving that plump full look on your lips, you can find ways to cheat this. One trick is to line the outer edges of your mouth with a concealer that has the same shade as your foundation. If you blend it into the fine lines around your lips and then apply your lipstick with some shimmery gloss, that is one shade lighter, in the middle of your top and bottom lips, this subtle light reflection makes your lips appear fuller than they actually are. So there you have it, from top to bottom, these are some ways to add a bit more youth to your face. Its important to not feel tempted to do all of this at once but if you can change one bit at a time then gradually you will find that you have a much more youthful looking face.

Trouble on the blue ocean - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog
Trouble on the blue ocean - The Chief Happiness Officer Blog Blue Ocean Strategy by W. Chan Kim and Ren?e Mauborgne has much in it to like, but in the end it fails to deliver usable business tools because of one huge flaw: It completely misrepresents the nature of corporate innovation. The book is subtitled How to create uncontested market space and make the competition irrelevant and is based on a blue ocean vs. red ocean metaphor. Businesses can stay in their place in the market and fight all others in that red-ocean space (think red with blood) or they can sail of into the blue ocean where no one else has gone yet. The book cites ventures by companies such as Cirque Du Soleil, Southwest Airlines, [yellowtail] wine, Apple and Curves gyms as examples of Blue Ocean Strategies. Blue Ocean makes 4 major points that every business can learn from: Pay attention All change begins with an appreciation of your current situation. First get to know your business and your market. Listen to your customers and to those who are not your customers. Go simple Look at what you can do, but also examine what you can stop doing. What are you doing that isnt really of value to the customer? How can a simpler product be of even greater value? Play a non-zero-sum game Dont fight over the pie grow the pie. Cirque Du Soleil didnt steal customers from Ringling Bros., they brought a whole new crowd of people to the circus. Visualize your strategy The book demonstrates a strategy canvas a 1-page chart that visualizes what areas to focus more or less on compared to the business today and to competitors. This helps sell the strategy inside the organization. Thats good advice. However, the approach described will not help companies create major change. The problem is the role the book gives to innovation. When the Blue Ocean strategic process is outlined, only one point out of 10 mentions new ideas, saying See which factors you should eliminate, create or change. In other words, one word (create) in one sentence focuses on the actual process of creating new ideas everything else is strategy. Thats not the way it works. It is typical, though, of the way many businesses misunderstand creativity. Theres a widespread illusion that innovation happens like this: A manager somewhere notices an untapped business opportunity He tasks someone with finding a way to tap that potential Someone comes up with an idea that matches the opportunity The idea is implemented In real life, however, innovation usually happens like this: Somebody, somewhere in the organizations has an idea often totally unrelated to his actual job He tries to interest others in it and is told to drop it He perseveres and finally someone else agrees to try it out The company suddenly discovers that it has a runaway hit on its hands If you dont believe me, read this story of how post-its were invented at 3M. If ever there was a Blue Ocean product this is it, but the process was most definitely NOT as described in the Blue Ocean book. It is my firm belief that few companies will be able to apply the tools in the Blue Ocean book to actually create ground-breaking innovation. Even the case stories cited in the book support this only two stories are told in which companies apply the books metods and they result only in incremental innovation. Which is not surprising. A measured strategic approach like the one described here is fine for creating measured, incremental change, but if you really want to take your business into uncharted water, you will need a completely different approach to innovation. The Negative Side Of Fighting For Your Country
The Negative Side Of Fighting For Your Country Aside from the fact that you have to put yourself at risk, working in a military role is often a very desirable position. The pay is very fair, you can often retire early, and you will gain the respect of those around you, all while getting to travel the world. With all of this on the table, this could be the perfect career choice for a lot of people. Of course, though, there is always a negative side to something like this, and the military comes with quite a big one. To give you an idea of what could be bad about a role like this, this post will be exploring some of the key elements which will put people off. Freedom: Itâs not really possible to work for the military while working for yourself. You will be told where you have to live, when you have to work, and the contracts can last for decades, making it hard for a lot of people to be happy with it. As an alternative, working for a security company could provide you with a similar sort of job, while still enabling you to handle it like a normal job, rather than a lifestyle choice. Rights: When youâre working overseas, you wonât always be covered by the same rights which you have at home. Instead, the country youâre in could dictate what you are entitled to, and this could leave the doors open to a lot of trouble. Defense Base Act attorneys can help with the issues which come with this. Of course, though, losing your rights isnât something most people will be happy with, even if youâre able to fight to get them back, and this makes the whole career into a write off. Payments: While you will earn a good wage when youâre in the military compared to other jobs, you probably wonât be paid fairly for the actual time you have to spend working. Given that you have to go to another country to do this work, you will often spend extremely long stretches doing solid work. You will be paid on a daily basis, though, making the hours which you do insignificant. Risk: It was mentioned at the start, but itâs worth considering the fact that you may have to fight a little bit more. Any job which puts your life at risk is something which you have to think seriously about. There are loads of jobs out there which wonât put you under any sort of jeopardy, while still providing similar benefits. Itâs important to consider how much working for this sort of organisation really means to you. Hopefully, this post will inspire you to start looking down other routes to satisfy you need for an exciting career. There are loads of jobs out there, and most of them donât come with the problems which a military job will provide, making it worth shopping around to see what you can find. You need to love your job, but you also need to get enough from it.
